Biography

Marco Ariola was born in Naples, Italy in 1971. He graduated in Electronic Engineering with honors in 1995 at the University of Naples Federico II. He worked for the Italian Aerospace Research Centre from 1995 to 1996, as a researcher in the group of Flight Mechanics and Control. He received a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 2000 from the University of Naples Federico II. In 1997 and 1998 he was a visiting researcher at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland, and for several periods between 1998 and 2000 Visiting Researcher at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Mexico, USA. He has also spent long periods at research laboratories for controlled thermonuclear fusion, and particularly in Japan, Naka at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, and in England at the JET (Joint European Torus), where he was responsible for numerous experiments. Presently he is EUROfusion deputy project leader for DEMO diagnostic and control (WPDC).

From July 2000 to March 2005 he has been Assistant Professor of Automatic Control at the University of Naples Federico II. From March 2005 to December 2012 he was an Associate Professor of Automatic Control at the University of Naples Parthenope, where, since December 2012 he is a Full Professor of Automatic Control.
His research is directed both to methodology issues, such as the study of stability and stabilization of uncertain systems, and to relevant applications, such as control of the plasma in machines for nuclear fusion and planning and tracking of trajectories for UAVs.

Since 2006 he is Associate Editor of the Editorial Board Conference of the IEEE Control Systems Society and, since 2006, IEEE Senior Member. Since 2017 he is Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology.

Biography

Dr. Kameshwar Poolla received the Bachelor of Technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1980, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Florida, Gainesville in 1984. He has served on the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana from 1984 to 1991. Since then, he has been with the University of California, Berkeley where he is the Cadence Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences. He currently serves as the Director of the IMPACT center for Integrated Circuit manufacturing at the University of California. Dr. Poolla has also held visiting appointments at Honeywell, McGill University, M.I.T., Michigan, Columbia, and Padova. He has worked as a Field Engineer with Schlumberger on oilrigs in West Africa. In 1999, he co-founded OnWafer Technologies which offers metrology based yield enhancement solutions for the semiconductor industry. OnWafer was acquired by KLA-Tencor in 2007. He has also serves as a technology and mergers/acquisitions consultant for Cadence Design Systems. Dr. Poolla has been awarded a 1988 NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, the 1993 Hugo Schuck Best Paper Prize, the 1994 Donald P. Eckman Award, the 1998 Distinguished Teaching Award of the University of California, and the IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing Best Paper Prizes in 2005 and 2007. Professor Poolla's research interests include System Identification, Robust Control, Semiconductor Manufacturing, Sensor Networks, and Medical Imaging.

Biography

Luca Zaccarian received the Laurea and the Ph.D. degrees from the University of Roma Tor Vergata (Italy) in 1995 and 2000, respectively. He was an Assistant Professor in control engineering at the University of Roma, Tor Vergata (Italy), from 2000 to 2006 and then Associate Professor. Since 2011 he is Directeur de Recherche at the LAAS-CNRS, Toulouse (France) and since 2013 he holds a part-time associate professor position at the University of Trento, Italy. Luca Zaccarian's main research interests include analysis and design of nonlinear and hybrid control systems, modeling and control of mechatronic systems. He has served in the organizing committee and TPC of several IEEE and IFAC conferences. He has been a member of the IEEE-CSS Conference Editorial Board and an associate editor for Systems and Control Letters and IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. He is currently a member of the EUCA-CEB and an associate editor for the IFAC journal Automatica and for the European Journal of Control. He was a nominated member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE-CSS in 2014, where he is an elected member in 2017-2019. He was Student Activities Chair for the IEEE-CSS in 2015--2017 and is currently Associate Editor of Electronic Publications (Conference Information) for the IEEE-CSS. He was a recipient of the 2001 O. Hugo Schuck Best Paper Award given by the American Automatic Control Council. He is a fellow of the IEEE, class of 2016.
