Biography

Giacomo Como is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Politecnico di Torino, Italy, and at the Automatic Control Department of Lund University, Sweden. He received the B.Sc., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Mathematics from Politecnico di Torino, in 2002, 2004, and 2008, respectively. He was a Visiting Assistant in Research at Yale University in 2006-2007 and a Postdoctoral Associate at the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, from 2008 to 2011.

He currently serves as Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering and of the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems, and as chair of the IEEE-CSS Technical Committee on Networks and Communication Systems. He is also a Guest Editor for a Special Issue on "Dynamics and Behaviors in Social Networks" of the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems and a Guest Associate Editor of a Special Section on "Mathematical Modeling, Analysis, and Control of Epidemics" in the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization. He was the IPC chair of the IFAC Workshop NecSys 2015 and a semi-plenary speaker at the International Symposium MTNS 2016 and the SICE ISCS 2017. He is a recipient of the 2015 George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award. His research interests are in dynamics, information, and control in network systems with applications to cyber-physical systems, infrastructure networks, and social and economic networks.

Biography

Fabrizio Dabbene received the Laurea degree in Electrical Engineering in 1995 and the Ph.D. degree in Systems and Computer Engineering in 1999, both from Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He is currently holding a Senior Researcher position at the institute CNR IEIIT of the National Research Council of Italy, where he is the coordinator of the Systems Modeling & Control (SMC) Group. He has held visiting and research positions at The University of Iowa, at Penn State University and at the RAS (Russian Academy of Sciences) Institute of Control Science, Moscow.

His research interests include probabilistic and randomized methods for systems and control, robust control and identification of complex systems, convex optimization, dynamical social networks, space robotics, and precision agriculture. On these topics, he has published more than 150 research papers, which include more than forty articles published in international journals. He is co-author of the book Randomized Algorithms for Analysis and Control of Uncertain Systems, Springer-Verlag, published in two editions, and editor of the book Probabilistic and Randomized Methods for Design under Uncertainty, also published by Springer. He has been co-organizer of several invited sessions and special courses, and of three Conference Workshops at CDC-00, MSC-08 and MSC-10. He is a recipient of the Outstanding Paper Award from EurAgeng in 2010. He served as Associate Editor for Automatica and as Chair of the IFAC Technical Committee on Robust Control.

Dr. Dabbene is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and he has taken various responsibilities within the IEEE Control Systems Society. He has been an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control (2008-2012), Program Chair for the 2010 IEEE Multiconference on Systems and Control, Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on CACSD (2010-2013), member of CEB (2002-2008), IPC member of various IEEE conferences, and member of several CDC Best Student Paper Award Committees. He is currently Senior Editor of the IEEE Control Systems Letters. He served as elected member of the IEEE-CSS Board of Governors for the years 2014-2016, and as IEEE-CSS Vice-President for Publication Activities for the years 2015-2016.

Biography

Maurice Heemels received the M.Sc. degree in mathematics and the Ph.D. degree in control theory (both summa cum laude) from the University of Technology, Eindhoven (TU/e), the Netherlands, in 1995 and 1999, respectively. From 2000 to 2004, he was with the Electrical Engineering Department, TU/e, and from 2004 to 2006 with the Embedded Systems Institute (ESI). Since 2006, he has been with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, TU/e, where he is currently a Full Professor. He held visiting professor positions at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Switzerland (2001), and at the University of California at Santa Barbara (2008). In 2004, he worked also at the company Oce, the Netherlands. His current research interests include hybrid and cyber-physical systems, networked and event-triggered control systems and constrained systems including model predictive control. Maurice served/s on the editorial boards of Automatica, Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems, Annual Reviews in Control, and IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. He was a recipient of a personal VICI grant awarded by STW (Dutch Technology Foundation, NWO/TTW) and is the current chair of the IFAC Technical Committee on Networked Systems. He is the founding father of a bi-annual PhD school on multi-disciplinary research topics such as hybrid, networked and cyber-physical systems educating over 600 PhD students worldwide since 2003. He was IPC (co-)chair of IFAC ADHS'12, ECC'13, IFAC NECSYS'13, and IFAC ADHS'18. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Biography

Sandra Hirche holds the TUM Liesel Beckmann Distinguished Professorship and heads the Chair of Information-oriented Control in the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany (since 2013). She received the diploma engineer degree in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering in 2002 from the Technical University Berlin, Germany, and the Doctor of Engineering degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2005 from the Technische Universität München, Munich, Germany.

From 2005 - 2007 she has been a PostDoc Fellow of the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science at the Fujita Laboratory at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. Prior to her present appointment she has been an Associate Professor at TUM. Her main research interests include learning, cooperative, and networked control with applications in human-robot interaction, multi-robot systems, and general robotics.

She has published more than 200 papers in international journals, books and refereed conferences. She has received multiple awards such as the Rohde & Schwarz Award for her PhD thesis, the IFAC World Congress Best Poster Award in 2005 and – together with students – Best Paper Awards of IEEE Worldhaptics and IFAC Conference of Manoeuvring and Control of Marine Craft in 2009 and the Outstanding Student Paper Award of the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control 2018. In 2013 she has been awarded with an ERC Starting Grant on the “Control based on Human Models” and in 2019 with the ERC Consolidator Grant on “Safe data-driven control for human-centric systems”.

Sandra Hirche is Fellow of the IEEE and received the IEEE Control System Society Distinguished Member Award. She has served as IEEE Control System Society (CSS) Vice-President for Member Activities (2014/15), as Chair for Student Activities in the IEEE CSS (2009-2014), as Chair of the CSS Awards Subcommittee on “CDC Best Student-Paper Award” (2010-2014), and has been elected member of the Board of Governors of IEEE CSS (2010-2013). She has been Co-Chair of the IFAC TC 1.5 “Networked Control Systems” (2010-2017).

Biography

Qing-Shan (Samuel) Jia (S’02–M’06–SM’11) received the B.E. degree in automation and the Ph.D. degree in control science and engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2002 and 2006, respectively.

He is an Associate Professor with the Centre for Intelligent and Networked Systems, Department of Automation, Beijing National Research Center for Information Science and Technology, Tsinghua University. He was a Visiting Scholar with Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 2006, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong, in 2010, and the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 2013. His current research interests include integrated data-driven, statistical, and computational approaches to find designs and decision-making policies that have simple structures and guaranteed good performance. His research relies on strong collaborations with experts in manufacturing systems, energy systems, autonomous systems, and smart cities.

Dr. Jia is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, and Discrete Event Dynamic Systems: Theory and Applications. He served as the Discrete Event Systems Technical Committee Chair of the IEEE Control Systems Society from 2012 to 2015 and currently serves as the Chair of the IFAC Technical Committee 9.3 on “Control for Smart Cities” and the Smart Buildings Technical Committee Co-Chair of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and the Beijing Chapter Chair of the IEEE Control Systems Society.

Biography

Yannis Paschalidis is a Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Boston University (BU) with appointments in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Computing & Data Sciences at Boston University. He is the Director of the Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science & Engineering -- BU's federation and convergence accelerator of all University centers and initiatives in this area of research. He obtained a Diploma (1991) from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and an M.S. (1993) and a Ph.D. (1996) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), all in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has been at Boston University since 1996. His current research interests lie in the fields of optimization, control, stochastic systems, robust learning, computational medicine, and computational biology. He has published a monograph and more than 250 refereed papers in these topics, and he has been the primary advisor to 29 Ph.D. theses.

Prof. Paschalidis' work has been recognized with a CAREER award (2000) from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the second prize in the 1997 George E. Nicholson

paper competition by INFORMS, the best student paper award at the 9th Intl. Symposium of Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt 2011) won by one of his Ph.D. students for a joint paper, an IBM/IEEE Smarter Planet Challenge Award, and a finalist best paper award at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA). His work on protein docking has been recognized for best performance in modeling selected protein-protein complexes against 64 other predictor groups (2009 Protein Interaction Evaluation Meeting). His recent work on health informatics won an IEEE Computer Society Crowd Sourcing Prize and a best paper award by the International Medical Informatics Associations (IMIA). He was an invited participant at the 2002 Frontiers of Engineering Symposium organized by the National Academy of Engineering, and at the 2014 National Academies Keck Futures Initiative (NAFKI) Conference. Prof. Paschalidis is a Fellow of both IEEE and IFAC and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems from 2013 until 2019. He is currently the Vice President of Publication Activities of the IEEE Control Systems Society.

Biography

Ketan Savla is an assistant professor and John and Dorothy Shea Early Career Chair in Civil Engineering at the University of Southern California, with joint appointments in the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (courtesy), and the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering-Systems (courtesy). Prior to that, he was a research scientist in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems at MIT. Ketan is 2017 recipient of American Automatic Control Council’s prestigious the Donald P. Eckman Award. The Eckman Award recognizes an outstanding young engineer in the field of automatic control. The recipient must be younger than 35 years on January 1 of the year of award. In addition, he has been recognized with NSF CAREER and an IEEE CSS George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award. He obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and M.A. in Applied Mathematics from the University of California at Santa Barbara, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. His current research interest is in distributed robust and optimal control, dynamical networks, state-dependent queuing systems, and incentive design, with applications in civil infrastructure and autonomous systems. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Conference Editorial Board of the IEEE Control Systems Society, the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, and the IEEE Control Systems Letters.

Biography

Anna Scaglione received her “Laurea” and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Rome, Italy in 1995 and 1999 respectively. She was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Minnesota in 2000.

Dr. Scaglione is a Professor in electrical and computer engineering at Arizona State University. Prior to ASU, she was a Professor of electrical engineering from 2010 to 2014 and Associate Professor from 2008-2010 at the University of California at Davis. Before joining UC Davis Anna Scaglione was Assistant Professor (2001-2006) and then tenured Associate Professor at Cornell from 2006 to 2008. Prior to joining Cornell, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico from 2000-2001. In 2006, she was visiting professor at EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland, and in 2013 at Stanford University.

Scaglione was elevated to IEEE fellow in 2011 and was so honored by both the Signal Processing and the Communication Societies. She is the first author of the paper that received the 2000 IEEE Signal Processing Transactions Best Paper Award is co-recipient of the 2013 IEEE Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award for the best review paper in that year across all IEEE publications. Her research with her students was also honored with the 2013 IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award (Lin Li), and several conferences best papers awards. She was also a recipient of the NSF CAREER grant in 2002 and of the Outstanding mid-career faculty in the College of Engineering at UC Davis.

A co-holder of eight granted U.S. patents, Scaglione is the author of hundreds publications with collaborators and many of her pupils. Since 2001, Scaglione has been a frequent keynote or plenary speaker. She is currently one of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Distinguished Lecturers for 2019-2020.

She is currently serving as Deputy EiC for the IEEE Transactions on Control of Networked Systems where she was Associate Editor 2016-2017 and then Senior Editor 2018-2019.

Biography

Dr. Yan Wan is currently an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Arlington. She received her Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Washington State University in 2009 and then postdoctoral training at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research interests lie in the modeling, evaluation and control of large-scale dynamical networks, cyber-physical system, stochastic networks, decentralized control, learning control, networking, uncertainty analysis, algebraic graph theory, and their applications to UAV networking, UAV traffic management, epidemic spread, complex information networks, and air traffic management. She received research grants from the NSF, ONR, NIST, IEEE, and MITRE Corporation as subcontracts from FAA. Her research has led to over 140 publications and successful technology transfer outcomes. She has been recognized by several prestigious awards, including the NSF CAREER Award, RTCA William E. Jackson Award, U.S. Ignite and GENI demonstration awards, IEEE WCNC and ICCA Best Paper Awards, UNT Early Career Award for Research and Creativity, and Tech Titan of the Future – University Level Award. Her research on UAV-carried Wi-Fi system for emergency communication has been reported by many government-agency websites and media outlets, including NSF, NBC, NPR, Huffington Post, and the Washington Times. She is the Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems and Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control, Conference Editorial Board Member of the IEEE Control Systems Society, Vice President for IEEE ComSoc Fort Worth Chapter, and Technical Committee Member of AIAA Intelligent Systems.
