Biography

Frank Allgöwer is director of the Institute for Systems Theory and Automatic Control and professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Stuttgart in Germany.

He studied Engineering Cybernetics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Stuttgart and the University of California at Los Angeles respectively. He received his Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Stuttgart. Prior to his present appointment, he held a professorship in the electrical engineering department at ETH Zurich. He also held visiting positions at the California Institute of Technology, the NASA Ames Research Center, the DuPont Company and the University of California at Santa Barbara.

His main interests in research and teaching are in the area of systems and control with emphasis on the development of new methods for the analysis and control of nonlinear systems. Of equal importance to the theoretical developments are practical applications and the experimental evaluation of benefits and limitations of the developed methods. Applications range from control of atomic force microscopes and biomedical applications to the control of roller coasters and systems biology.

At present Frank Allgöwer is Editor for the journal Automatica, Associate Editor of the Journal of Process Control and is on the editorial board of several further journals including the Journals of Robust and Nonlinear Control, IET Control Theory and Applications, Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, the journal Chemical Engineering Science and the Springer Lecture Notes in Control and Information Sciences Series. Among others he serves on the scientific council of the German Society for Measurement and Control (GMA), is on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Control System Society, is chairman of the IFAC Technical Committee on Nonlinear Systems, is member of the IFAC Policy Committee and chairman of the International Affairs Committee of IEEE CSS and has been a member of the council of the European Union Control Association.

Frank Allgöwer has been organizer or co-organizer of several international conferences and has published over 150 scientific articles. Frank Allgöwer received several recognitions for his work including the IEEE distinguished lectureship, the appointment as IFAC Fellow and the Leibniz prize, which is the most prestigious prize in science and engineering awarded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

Biography

Dr. Bequette worked for three years as a process engineer for American Petrofina between his undergraduate and graduate studies. From 1986 to 1987 he was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Texas and from 1987 to 1988 he was a Visiting Lecturer at the University of California at Davis. He joined the Rensselaer faculty in 1988 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1994 and Professor in 2000. Dr. Bequette was on sabbatical leave during the 1995-6 academic year, spending the fall semester at Merck Research Laboratories and the spring at Northwestern University.

Dr. Bequette served as an Associate Editor for Automatica from 1993-2005. He was also the Program Chair of the 2001 American Control Conference (Washington, D.C.), the General Chair of the 2003 American Control Conference (Denver), and the AIChE Director on the Board of the American Automatic Control Council (2000-1). He was the Chair of the Computing and Systems Technology (CAST) Division of AIChE in 2006, and the President of the American Automatic Control Council (AACC) in 2008-9. He currently serves as the AIChE CAST Division Programming Chair (2010-2013). He is a Fellow of the AIChE (May 2008), was inducted into the Arkansas Academy of Chemical Engineers (April 2007), received the Rensselaer School of Engineering Research Excellence Award (2008), and was named a Trustee of the CACHE Corporation (2010-2012).

Dr. Bequette is the author of Process Control: Modeling, Design and Simulation (2003) and Process Dynamics: Modeling, Analysis and Simulation (1998), both published by Prentice Hall. He served as the Guest Editor of Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics (February 2005), for a Symposium on Algorithms for Continuous Glucose Monitoring and Control. Dr. Bequette also edited special issues on Process Control for the IEEE Control Systems Magazine (August and December 2006). He is a founding member of the editorial board of the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology and has co-edited a number of special issues on algorithms for sensors and a closed-loop artificial pancreas

Biography

Bhushan Gopaluni is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Associate Dean, Education and Professional Development in the Faculty of Applied Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

He is also an associate faculty in the Institute of Applied Mathematics, the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems, Pulp and Paper Center and the Clean Energy Research Center.

He is currently an associate editor for Journal of Process Control, Journal of The Franklin Institute, and guest editor for Process Control Special Series in the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering.

He received a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta in 2003 and a Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1997 both in the field of chemical engineering.

From 2003 to 2005 he worked as an engineering consultant at Matrikon Inc. (now Honeywell Process Solutions) during which he had designed and commissioned multivariable controllers in British Columbia’s pulp and paper industry, and had implemented numerous controller performance monitoring projects in the Oil & Gas and other chemical industries.

He is one of the leading experts on data analytics for process industry and has authored over 110 refereed articles in reputed international Journals and conferences. His publications have been recognized through best paper awards and keynote presentations.

He is also the recipient of the prestigious Killam Teaching Prize and the Dean’s service medal from the University of British Columbia.

Juergen Hahn is the department head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in addition to holding an appointment in the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering. He received his Diploma degree in engineering from RWTH Aachen, Germany, in 1997, and his MS and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Texas, Austin, in 1998 and 2002, respectively. He was a post-doctoral researcher at the Chair for Process Systems Engineering at RWTH Aachen, Germany, before joining the Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University, College Station, in 2003 and moving to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2012. His research interests include systems biology and process modeling and analysis with over 140 peer-reviewed publications in print. Dr. Hahn is a recipient of a Fulbright scholarship (1995/96), received the Best Referee Award for 2004 from the Journal of Process Control, the CPC 7 Outstanding Contributed Paper Award in 2006, was named Outstanding Reviewer by the journal Automatica in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2010 CAST Outstanding Young Researcher, and has been elected as an AIMBE Fellow in 2013 and an AIChE Fellow in 2020. He served on the IEEE CSS Board of Governors in 2016 and has been a CACHE Trustee since 2014. He is currently serving as deputy editor-in-chief for the Journal of Process Control, as editor for the journal Optimal Control: Applications and Methods, and as associate editor for the journals Control Engineering Practice and the Journal of Advanced Manufacturing and Processing.

Biography

Boris Houska is an associate professor at the School of Information Science and Technology at ShanghaiTech University. His research interests include numerical optimization and optimal control, robust and global optimization, as well as fast model predictive control algorithms.

Boris Houska received a diploma in mathematics and physics from the University of Heidelberg in 2007, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from KU Leuven in 2011. From 2012 to 2013 he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Process Systems Engineering at Imperial College London. Subsequently, from 2013-14, he has worked as a research faculty member at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Moreover, he has held visiting professor positions at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies as well as at the Institute for Microsystems Engineering at the University of Freiburg (both in 2014) and various shorter academic visiting appointments, e.g., at UC Berkeley during Winter 2017 and Imperial College London during Summer 2018.

Boris Houska has been the recipient of awards including ICCOPT Best Paper Prize for a Young Researcher in Continuous Optimization (Finalist, Top 3), a Marie-Curie Fellowship for the project Next Generation Algorithms for Robust and Global Optimization of Dynamic Systems, as well as an ShanghaiTech Excellent Professor Award from ShanghaiTech University. His paper on “ACADO Toolkit — An open-source framework for automatic control and dynamic optimization” has been listed as a highly cited paper by Web of Science.

Thomas Meurer (Senior Member, IEEE) received the diploma in Process Systems Engineering from the University of Stuttgart, Germany in 2001, the M.Sc. in Engineering Science and Mechanics from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA in 2000, and the Doctor of Engineering degree from the University of Stuttgart in 2005. From 2005 to 2007 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Chair of System Theory and Automatic Control at the Saarland University, Germany. In 2007 he joined the Automation and Control Institute at the TU Vienna, Austria as a Senior Researcher, where he was appointed Associate Professor (Privatdozent) in 2012. Since 2012 he has been Full Professor and head of the Automatic Control Group at Kiel University, Germany. He is Associate Editor for the journals Automatica, IEEE Control Systems Letters, and Mathematical Control and Related Fields. He was chair of the IFAC TC 2.6 on Distributed Parameter Systems from 2011 to 2017 and has been chair of the TC 1.40 Systems Theory and Automatic Control of the VDI/GMA since 2017 and the IEEE-CSS TC Distributed Parameter Systems since 2019. He received the VDI/GMA Eugen Hartmann Award in 2009, the Cardinal Innitzer Award in 2012, the IFAC Congress Best Interactive Paper Prize at the 2017 IFAC World Congress, and the Control Engineering Practice Paper Prize Award in 2020. His research interests include control of distributed parameter systems, nonlinear control theory, observer design, and optimal control with applications in robotics, production processes, mechatronics, marine systems, and process systems engineering.

Biography

Maria Prandini was born in Brescia, Italy, on September 8, 1969. She received the Laurea degree cum laude in Electrical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano (1994), and the Ph.D. degree in Information Technology from the Universita degli Studi di Brescia (1998). After her Ph.D. studies, she was a visiting postdoctoral researcher at the Electronics Research Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, from 1998 to 2000. She also held visiting positions at Delft University of Technology (1998), Cambridge University (2000), University of California, Berkeley (2005), and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (2006).

From December 2002 to January 2011, she was Assistant Professor at the Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione of the Politecnico di Milano. From February 2011 to February 2018, she was Associate Professor at the same department, which is now named Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria, where she is currently Full Professor.

Her research interests include randomized methods for system analysis and design; modeling, verification and control of stochastic and hybrid systems; and multi-agent systems, involving distributed optimization and game theoretic solutions for cooperative and noncooperative decision making. Her research studies were motivated mainly by applications to the transportation and energy domains.

Since 1999, she has been teaching courses in control at the undergraduate and graduate levels, in Italy as well as at international institutions abroad. In particular, she was a lecturer of a Ph.D. course on Stochastic Systems: Estimation and Control at the University of California, Berkeley (spring 1999), a master course on Hybrid systems at the University of Stuttgart (first semester 2014-15), and a Ph.D course on Hybrid systems at Lund University (October 2015). She is a lecturer of a master course on Nonlinear control at her institution, where she has also been teaching advanced courses for Ph.D. students on Hybrid Systems and Cooperative and Noncooperative Optimization and Control.

She is currently Chair of the Automation and Control Engineering Program at Politecnico di Milano.

She was the principal investigator in the EC-funded H2020 project UnCoVerCPS \Unifying Control and Verification of Cyber-Physical Systems" (2015{2018), being responsible for the scientific activities of the PoliMi team, which include the development of distributed optimization techniques for networked systems. Previously, she contributed to EC-funded projects on modeling, verification and control of stochastic and hybrid systems with application to the energy and transportation domains. More specifically, she was workpackage leader in the FP5 project HYBRIDGE \Distributed control and stochastic analysis of hybrid systems, supporting safety-critical real-time systems design" (2002{2005), and principal investigator in the FP6 project iFly \Safety, Complexity and Responsibility based design and validation of highly automated Air Trac Management" (2007{2011) and in the FP7 project MoVeS \Modelling, verification and control of complex systems: From foundations to power network applications" (2010-2013).

She has been a member of the editorial boards of leading journals in control as an associate editor (IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 2009-2013, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, 2009-2015, and Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems, 2011-2015) and as a discussion editor (European Journal of Control, 2007-2013). She is a member of the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) Conference Editorial Board (since 2007) and of the European Control Association (EUCA) Conference Editorial Board (since 2013) as an associate editor. She is currently associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems. She has been active in the IEEE CSS and the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). She is a member of the IFAC Technical Committee on Discrete Event and Hybrid Systems (since 2008). She has been appointed member of the IFAC Policy Committee for the term 2017-2020. She has been contributing to the activities and governance of the IEEE CSS in different roles. From 2013 to 2015, she was editor for the CSS Electronic Publications. She was elected member of the IEEE CSS Board of Governors for a three-year term (2015-2017). She was IEEE CSS Vice-President for Conference Activities in 2016 and 2017. She has been an elected member of the CSS nominating committee for the year 2018.

She is currently a member of SIGBED Board of Directors.

She has been a member of the program committees of several international conferences and either organizing or contributing to invited sessions, workshops, and tutorials. She was co-chair of the 21st ACM International Conference on Hybrid Systems: Computation and Control (HSCC 2018).

Currently, she is co-program chair of IEEE Conference on Decisione and Control 2020 and program chair of IEEE Conference on Decisione and Control 2021.

In 2018, she received the IEEE CSS Distinguished Member Award for contributions to stochastic, hybrid, and distributed control systems and outstanding service to the Control Systems Society related to electronic publications and conference activities.

In 2019 she was elevated to IEEE Fellow, effective 1 January 2020, with the following citation: “for contributions to stochastic, hybrid and distributed control systems theory.”

Dr. S. Joe Qin obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Automatic Control from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, in 1984 and 1987, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Maryland at College Park in 1992. He began his professional career in 1992 as a principal engineer at Emerson Process Management, a subsidiary of Emerson Electric, to work on advanced process control. After having developed two advanced control products, he joined the University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor in 1995. He was promoted to associate professor and professor in 2000 and 2003, respectively, and was the holder of the Paul D. and Betty Robertson Meek and American Petrofina Foundation Centennial Professorship in Chemical Engineering until 2007. From 2007 to 2019 he was the Fluor Professor at the Viterbi School of Engineering of the University of Southern California. He was co-director of the Texas-Wisconsin-California Control Consortium (TWCCC) where he was Co-PI for 24 years to conduct research on industry-sponsored projects. His research has directly impacted around 50 corporations that have been members of the Consortium. He is currently Chair Professor of Data Science at the City University of Hong Kong.

Dr. Qin’s research interests include data analytics, machine learning, latent variable methods; high-dimensional time series latent variable modeling, process monitoring and fault diagnosis, model predictive control, system identification, semiconductor manufacturing control, and data-driven control and optimization. He has over 400 publications in international journals, book chapters, conference papers, and conference presentations with peer-reviewed abstracts. He delivered over 50 invited plenary or keynote speeches and over 120 invited technical seminars worldwide.

He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the 2011 Northrop Grumman Best Teaching award at Viterbi School of Engineering, the DuPont Young Professor Award, Halliburton/Brown & Root Young Faculty Excellence Award, NSF-China Outstanding Young Investigator Award, and recipient of the IFAC Best Paper Prize for a model predictive control survey paper published in Control Engineering Practice. He served as Senior Editor of Journal of Process Control, Editor of Control Engineering Practice, Member of the Editorial Board for Journal of Chemometrics, and Associate Editor for several other journals.
